Fauzia Ilyas (Template:Lang-ur) is a co-founder of Atheist & Agnostic Alliance Pakistan.[1][2][3][4] She sought asylum in Netherlands,[2][5] because her family members threatened her life,[6] and the authorities threatened to arrest her for blasphemy.[1][2][3]
Life
Ilyas grew up in a religious family in Pakistan.[2][5] At the age of 16, her father announced her arranged marriage with a businessman whom she had never met.[2][5] Her new husband forced her to veil and sexually abused her.[2][5] Ilyas sought help from her parents, but they refused, giving Islamic excuses for her husband's behaviour.[2][5] After daily unanswered prayers, Ilyas increasingly doubted the existence of Allah and professed her doubts to her husband.[2][5] He reacted by forcing her out of their home and preventing her from seeing their daughter.[2][5]
Later, Ilyas met a fellow atheist in Lahore named Sayed Gillani.[2][5] They married and together founded Atheist & Agnostic Alliance Pakistan.[2][5] After failing to keep their identities secret, they faced death threats and charges of blasphemy, which is legally punishable by death in Pakistan.[2][5] In 2015, they fled to the Netherlands.[2][5]
In 2017, Ilyas presented her story to the European Parliament with the IHEU.[4] That year, she also received the International Atheist of the Year award.[7]
