Summary

Description
English: Sheikh Absattar Derbisali, the Grand Mufti of Kazakhstan, standing in Astana's Grand Mosque. Built with Qatari money, the mosque shows how religion is back in vogue in Kazakhstan post independence. Sheikh Derbisali told me how Kazakhs remain extremely wary of Saudi funding and Wahabism which, he said, did not fit in with Kazakhstan's traditionally tolerant, liberal brand of Islam.
