Notes El inglés Carlos Wood fue uno de los últimos representantes de los ilustradores documentales que ejercían su obra bajo el encargo de instituciones, que en el caso de Wood fue la marina inglesa. Con una fuerte carga del romanticismo inglés, Wood desarrolló su obra en Chile en un tiempo de ausencia de academias e institutos de artes. En El naufragio del 'Arethusa' rescató un episodio trágico de las costas de Valparaíso a la manera del violento romanticismo de Gericault. Una sentimentalidad trágica en la lucha contra la naturaleza es traducida en violentos claroscuros que acentúan dramáticamente los perfiles de los elementos.
