Costumes Saami.jpg is a photo of Finns pretending to be Sámi. PLEASE DO NOT USE this photo. It is offensive. (for more information, see the warning below)
Saami clothes. february 2004. Fake clothes purporting to be Sámi clothing.
I asked Anthere where the picture was taken i.e. what nationality these people were, and she replied as below (cited from User talk:Habj) /Habj 1 July 2005 12:37 (UTC)
Possibly 20-30 km north of rovaniemi (which is on the polar circle in Finland). Don't know the name of the
place exactly as I went there on a motorsnow. Must have took me 3 hours from the place where we lived :-)
That day was the coldest I ever lived. And their nose was not frozen. I am still impressed.
'WARNING:'Do not use this image to illustrate articles about the Sámi people. The author has been unfortunately been hoaxed by the Rovaniemi-based Finnishtourist industry, which is infamous for displaying ethnically Finnish actors in fake "traditional Sámi outfits" performing equally fake "traditional rituals". The outfits pictured, while somewhat authentic-looking, are patterned in a way which is not traditional anywhere in Sápmi. The matter of the Finnish tourist industry exploiting the Sámi inhabitants in this way without any income from it ending up in indigenous hands is a hot Sámi political issue these days, and it is therefore also very unfortunate to post such pictures on Sámi-related wikipages.
