Summary

Description Gold Hill is a mile west of Virginia City and at one time was bigger being also situated on the "Big Bonanza" silver lode. The area pictured here is the "Divide" between the two cities. The photo was taken from the "flume" which was a wood ditch that carried water over two mountain ranges and a valley in what was one of the greatest engineering feats of the 1800's. The area in the foreground is an open pit mine from the 1900s.
