Summary

Description
English: Bench end in St Andrew's Church, Sutcombe, Devon. Arms of Grenville of Bideford in Devon and of Stowe in Cornwall: Gules, three clarions or. Other bench ends in this church may be dated to c.1550 from arms and marriages depicted. It is unclear what connection the Grenville family had to this parish. Possibly it refers to Sir Richard Grenville, Sheriff of Devon in 1532, as a means of showing respect to that officer, appointed by King Henry VIII. Most of the other bench ends relate to the Prideaux family of Thuborough, Sutcombe.
