Use of historic images from press agencies must only be of a transformative nature, when the image itself is the subject of commentary rather than the event it depicts (which is the original market role, and is not allowed per policy). | |||

Fair use rationale for image use on Pit of despair
[edit]Description: The Stephens book says: "Rhesus monkey infant in an isolation chamber. The photograph was taken when the chamber door was raised for the first time after half a year of 'total isolation'." The isolation chamber was one of Harry Harlow's.
Rationale for use in pit of despair: The image is an iconic one from a famous series of experiments conducted by psychologist Harry Harlow, who died in 1981. It has no commercial value that would be affected by our use; it is being used for educational purposes in articles about Harlow and his experiments; there is no way to obtain a free-license equivalent; and we have no reason to believe the copyright holder would object.
