Summary
[edit]Description | A male model wears a sweater by fashion house KTZ. The intricate designs on the black and white garment bear significant similarities to those on a well-known Inuit shamanic parka from the late 19th century. |

Use in article (WP:NFCC#7) | History of Inuit clothing |
Purpose of use in article (WP:NFCC#8) | To support encyclopedic discussion of this garment in this article. The illustration is specifically needed to support the following point(s): The image is used to visually demonstrate to readers the degree of similarity between the original Inuit garment and the KTZ version from 2015. This similarity can be described by text but it is far more valuable for readers to simply be able to look between the two images and identify the similarities themselves. It is contended that the use of a low-resolution image of the designs, for the purposes of identification, and to aid critical commentary, is fair-use. The image is an encyclopedic demonstration of the degree to which Inuit designs are appropriated without consideration by non-Inuit designers, which is difficult for the reader to grasp simply from textual descriptions. |
Not replaceable with free media because (WP:NFCC#1) |
The original garment is a unique design, and its very uniqueness is what makes the copied design so noticeable. Any attempt to recreate either garment would itself be derivative, and therefore not a free image. The KTZ garment was pulled from production after controversy. It is unclear whether the existing copies of the KTZ garment were destroyed or simply shelved; in any case, they are not accessible to be photographed by the public. |
Minimal use (WP:NFCC#3) | Single image of the KTZ garment, which will not be used in any other article. It is a single still image of the front of the garment, and is only one out of numerous images from the same photoset. The image will be of sufficient resolution to allow the reader to see the similarities between the garments, but no higher. In addition, the photo as used in the article is a cropped version of the whole, showing only the sweater rather than the whole outfit/entire photo. |
Respect for commercial opportunities (WP:NFCC#2) |
The full version of the image is publicly available on the internet on an un-paywalled site. Appropriate credit is given to the original photographer and the fashion house. Using a cropped image at a lower resolution now for visual identification and commentary on the subject does not detract from the commercial value of the photograph in its full high-resolution form. As the garment was pulled from sale following the controversy, a photograph of it cannot detract from any commercial value to KTZ. |
