Summary

(Kali Mata Mandir Tumsar Road Junction Railway Station (Devhadi)

Kali Mata Mandir Tumsar Road Railway Station (Devhadi)

There is a British carpet temple of the awakened Kalimata between the two railway tracks at Devhadi (Tumsar Road) on the Mumbai-Howrah railway line.  According to a legend, the British forced the goddess to bow down.

India's first passenger train runs from Mumbai to Thane on April 16, 1853, but even before that, the country's first industrial train ran from Red Hills in 1837 to Chitandripet in Madras.

The first train from Nagpur to Bhandara ran on March 12, 1881.  According to British records, the train ran from Nagpur to Devhadi (Tumsar Road).  The bridge over the Sur River was very challenging when laying the railway line on this route.  During the thirteenth month of the drought, i.e. in May 1879, floods had hit the area, so the railway project was delayed.

The forest department was given the task of supplying wooden sleepers to be laid under the tracks on this route.  But due to delays by the forest department, 25,000 pine sleepers were received from England.  The steam locomotive was brought from England after the laying of the railway line was completed.  Arrangements for coal depot, water charging, telegraph were already made at Devhadi (Tumsar Road).

The story of Kali Maa temple here is very interesting and mysterious.  There is an old legend that at that time most of the workers who came here from Bengal were working in the railways.  According to the plan of the work where the railway work was started, the temple of Kali Mata was coming in the middle of the railway track.  But when the British government needed to expand the track, they were coming to the temple.  British authorities tried hard to move the temple.  But they did not succeed. Kali Mata went to the chief officer in a dream and told him about canceling the proposal to move the temple.  Whenever they tried, they had to face disaster in their work.  Eventually, they gave up the idea of tearing down the temple and decided to keep it there. For that, they adjusted the railway track. Even today, at Tumsar Road (Devhadi) station, the temple can be seen between two railway tracks.

Local devotees later erected a beautiful idol of the goddess at this place.  Local devotees worship at this place every day.  Along with the locals, railway officials and employees participate in the worship of the Goddess.  Kali Mata is a form of Durga Mata, so there is a crowd of devotees here during Durga festival.  Although legends have been told, the temple of Goddess Kali, situated between two railway tracks, is considered to be a place of worship and is currently frequented by a large number of devotees.  It is known to be the only temple between railway tracks in all of India.
