English: According to Robert Layng, a Foreign Service Officer at USAID who has taken a leading role in USAID’s support to WWF and the government of Mozambique, attracting private investment into the tourism sector is central to ensuring that the Reserve realizes its potential to create economic opportunity. “The end goal is to ensure financial sustainability of the reserve. Targeted growth in the tourism sector is one of the best prospects for generating revenue for the reserve. The Tourism sector also creates jobs on Lake Niassa and highlights the economic value of protecting the lake while also providing revenue from sustainable resource use”, said Mr. Layng.
