Media data and Non-free use rationale
Description This particular image is a June 10, 1969 collage depicting five of the six women killed by the Michigan Murderer, first published in the Ann Arbor News on this date. File is intended to solely illustrate the 'public unrest' section of the article (relating to the publicity generated to the case and the geographical locations of the victim discoveries suggesting a then-unknown perpetrator was a fellow student of many of those slain).

Use in article (WP:NFCC#7) Michigan murders
Purpose of use in article (WP:NFCC#8) To support encyclopedic discussion of this work in this article. The illustration is specifically needed to support the following point(s):

For visual identification of the successive discoveries in question, the justification for the linking of these successive crimes, and the media (rightly, as would unfold) speculating the murderer was a fellow Michigan University student.

  • Image had been tinted prior to uploading to make it of an inferior quality than that of the source linked above.
  • Image is cropped from that of original, reducing commercial reproduction likeliness.
  • The image is much smaller than the original (original image size is 665x552px; this image is 528x415px)
  • Image is chronologically incomplete at the time of publication, as it does not hark towards or depict the sixth victim. This also makes commercial use of reproduced copies of the image highly unlikely

  • Image is cropped from original
  • This (low quality, cropped) photograph can be reasonably described as "irreplaceable" and meets the Non-free content criteria - in particular given the fact that this image has already been widely distributed outside of Wikipedia, in much greater sizes and quality. No free alternative exists.
  • The image is significant given the content of the section of the article upon which SOLE usage is intended.

Other information

  • This image has no free equivalent, as explained above; therefore meeting the Wikipedia guideline (NFCC1).
  • As explained elsewhere in the summary; the intended content of this reduced size, lower quality than original, image is not intended for use in a manner detrimental to the original copyrighted media (NFCC2)
  • Further to above clarification: The image is to be used in one sub section only upon the Michigan Murders article. As the NFCC#3 guideline states: 'An entire work is not used; if a portion will suffice.' This image is cropped from that of the original, is of a reduced size, and is of a lower hue and resolution quality (NFCC3)
  • This image has already been widely distributed in the media, via various methods, since 1969 and in doing so, this image has been repeatedly and continuously displayed in both a better visual quality, uncropped, and in a greater size than the one used here (NFCC4).
  • Image is pertinent to a significant section of the article in question (NFCC5)
  • The image is relevant to section in question; and would significantly increase readers' understanding of the investigation of the murders. Plus, the image will be used in one subsection of this article only (NFCC5, NFCC6 & NFCC7)
  • The inclusion of this image would significantly increase readers' understanding of the chronologically evolving aspect of media and police - separately, but in tandem (via provision by Walter Krasny) - cataloging the successive victims, and the congealed desire from law enforcement and media personnel to apprehend the perpetrator. Image's omission would indeed be detrimental to that understanding, plus geographical factors (NFCC8)
  • The precise name I have given to this file - plus the nature of the content - make any ambiguous usage of this image extremely unlikely (NFCC9)
  • Having specifically named and credited the website from where I captured this image, plus my having specifically named the original author of the image in question, who released it to the mass media, as well as meeting all the specific criteria outlined above, verifies that this image does meet the Non-free use rationale guidelines outlined by Wikipedia (NFCC10)
