Summary[edit]

Radio sample from RTÉ 2fm demonstrating how the sudden death of its most high profile broadcaster Gerry Ryan was relayed to listeners.

Description: Friday 30 April 2010. Larry Gogan, whose show is airing in its scheduled slot on in the afternoon, passes listeners over the newsroom for a newsflash. The newsreader states that Gerry Ryan has been found dead at the age of 53 and that there will be a further update at 16:00. For many people this was how they first learned of the event. The immediate reaction of Ryan's long-serving colleague Larry Gogan is captured. Then a brief sample of the reaction of Will Leahy whose show was the next to air. Further detail on the significance of Ryan's death is available in his article.

Fair use rationale for Death of Gerry Ryan[edit]

This is a sound sample from a radio recording. Its inclusion here is claimed as fair use because:

  1. It illustrates an educational article that specifically discusses the subject from which this sample was taken, capturing the immediate reaction to news of Gerry Ryan's death.
  2. It is a smaller sample from a much longer recording, and could not be used as a substitute for the original recording.
  3. It is of a lower quality than the original recording.
  4. It is not replaceable with an uncopyrighted or freely copyrighted sample of comparable educational value.
  5. It is believed that this sample will not affect the value of the original work or limit the copyright holder's rights or ability to distribute the original recording.
  6. The radio station makes its material available as a free podcast to listeners in an online archive. Link to Gerry Ryan podcasts.

This sample considerably improves the quality of the articles it is part of, serving as an adequate sample of how the news of Gerry Ryan's death was relayed by RTÉ 2fm, where he worked for several decades.
