Vera Deakin, daughter of former Prime Minister Alfred Deakin, established the Australian Branch of the Wounded and Missing Enquiry Bureau in 1915. The bureau played an important role throughout the war, providing an official link between anxious relatives and military officials.
Following the war Deakin married Thomas White, a former prisoner of war and the only Australian to have escaped from a Turkish prisoner–of–war camp. She remained active in the Australian Red Cross until the 1970s. She died on 9 August 1978, aged 86.
