incertitudes, les doute squi aient pu accueillir Henri VIII, repris plusieurs fois, quelquefois trop vite déserté, paraissant, disparaissant sur les scènes les plus diverses, mais toujours comme dune force primordiale ressaisissant la place qui lui semble un jour réservée et méritée, j'estime que Henri VIII doit compter et se maintiendra entre les œuvres les plus heureusement conçues et réalisées dans ce genre de l'opéra historique. En soi le sujet est dramatique; le personnage principal impose l'intérêt, l'angoisse, l'épouvante. Il se hausse même jusquà la grandeur nationale, lorsqu'au service de ses passions il met l'orgueil d'un peuple tout entier. Il fait peur. Le sang rougit la boue; et dès lors ce n'est plus de la boue. A cet Henri VIII oh les librettistes sont deux, Détroyat et Armand Silvestre, même trois, Shakespeare consulté n'étant pas tout à fait négligeable, Gounod, bon juge, a consacré quelques pages d'analyse attentive et déloges singulièrement flatteurs. Mais l'œuvre de Henri VIII est connue; et chacun a tout le loisir d'y détailler ses préférences, de la marche du synode, de sairs de ballet si pittoresques, d'invention si abondante, aux airs si expressifs, au duo troublant d'Anne et du roi Henri. L'embarras n'est que des beautés d'inlassable sollicitation. Toutefois en ces opéras dont la forme et la tradition sont aujourdh'ui, du moins en un milieu tapageur et grognon, sinon auprès du grand pu-lic, dédaignés et réprouvés, il est parfois un passage plus bruyamment applaudi des auditeurs premiers que pas un autre, un passage attendu, guetté des générations successivement conquises et asservies, une sorte derendez-vous où la salle entière se retrouve attentive, anxieuse et déjà toute frémissante.
