Description
English: The Southgate-Lewis House [1] is located at 1501 East 12th Street in Austin, Texas. The Southgate-Lewis House represents a treasured architectural example of a 19th century Victorian home (in the Stick architectural style and/or the Eastlake architectural style) constructed by the renowned craftsman R.C. Lambie (who also built other historic landmarks such as the Elisabet Ney Museum, Hays County Courthouse, Old Main, and more); it has also come to represent a treasure to the African-American historical legacy in Austin and Travis County because of the distinguished African-American individuals who have been associated with the house (specifically, the Charles M. Lewis family, Ada Marie DeBlanc Simond, Wesley H. Passon, and more). The Southgate-Lewis House has been designated a City, State, and National Landmark. In December of 1986, the Southgate-Lewis House was donated to the W.H. Passon Historical Society by Duane G. Albrecht, a professor at The University of Texas at Austin. The W.H. Passon Historical Society is an organization that strives to secure and preserve materials and artifacts related to the African-American, Black cultural legacy in Austin and Travis County.
