King Square (which in any other town would be calleda Park) is that level plot situated at the head of KingStreet, and extending to Sydney Street. In the Square thevisitor finds a monument erected to the memory of Fred.Young, a youth who, during a wild storm, lost his life inCourtenay Bay in a fruitless effort to save a boy fromdrowning. There has also recently been erected in thissquare a new bandstand, and a number of band concertswill be held during the summer months. The stonebuilding facing the monument is the Court House, behindwhich are the Gaol and Police Station. The Old Burying Ground (lying northeast of KingSquare) contains the graves of many of the founders of thisCity by the Sea—Loyalists, and their immediatedescendants. Here are many quaint old tombstones, withequally quaint epitaphs, marking the resting places of thforefathers of many of the the citizens of St. John. 17 Text Appearing After Image: From the Queen Square, situate two blocks south ofKing Square, fine views of the Bay and entrance to theHarbor are obtained. In this Square has recently beenerected a splendid statue of Samuel de Champlain, over-looking the waters sailed by the discoverer more than 300years ago.
