Summary

Description

Another look at the diminutive locomotive. It was fascinating to climb into it as well. (Mauritius, Mar. 2005) (Loss of colour and quality due to scan from print: photo was taken on 35mm film).

Surprised? Train in Mauritius

Trust me to sniff out railroads in otherwise trainless territory! We were quite surprised to spot this tiny tank locomotive in the childrens' play area in the Casela Bird Park. Freshly painted, she was is pretty good condition for a rusting hulk. In reality, the last passenger train in Mauritius had run in 1956, and the railway closed down completely in 1964. (Thanks to my good friend in Australia Mr. John Lacey for additional information regarding dates etc. I was amazed to learn from John that Mauritius once had even standard gauge railways operating on the island. This narrow gauge locomotive was probably from one of the 'sugarcane field' railways on the island.) Love that balloon stack chimney of the locomotive!
