xi CANADA : WESTWARD JOURNEY 393 though he knows that he will have to starve for the next six days. As to the practical result of the benevolent efforts of the Government the most competent authorities are not agreed. Some declare that the Indians of the reserves are rapidly accommodating themselves to the conditions of civilised life, and there is no doubt that individual cases can be cited in support of this view. On the other hand, some well-informed people shake their heads ominously and remark : The Red Man is gradually disappearing ; it is only a question of time.
