English: Typology of collaborative situations
Collaborative situations can be categorized with respect to space and time as shown in the figure [Waltz, 2003]. This time and space matrix distinguishes between support of local and distributed (space) working contexts and between synchronous or asynchronous (time) work situations [Johansen, 1988]. There has been extensive research in Computer Supported Collaborative Work (CSCW) and other communities in all four quadrants of this diagram. However, attention to the role of visualization in cooperative work and to the process of cooperative-competitive (or collaborative) analytical reasoning has been limited. Below, we briefly highlight key aspects of the current state of the art and identify critical gaps in both knowledge and analytic methods relevant to development and application of collaborative visual analytics. |
