math notation

The thing between E₁ and E₂ looks like a hyphen, but I suspect it's intended to be a minus sign. Notice some differences:

E₁-E₂

E₁ − E₂

The first thing above is a hyphen; the second is a minus sign.

$E_{1}{\text{-}}E_{2}\,$

$E_{1}-E_{2}\,$

Again, the first thing is a hyphen and the second is a minus sign.

A minus sign is longer and has spaces before and after it.
