Filippo Drago

Filippo Drago (born 5 December 1954 in Enna, Italy) is an Italian pharmacologist, neurologist and psychiatrist.

He has played several functions in international pharmacological societies, such as President of Federation of European Pharmacological Societies[1] and member of International Union of Basic and Clinical Pharmacology (IUPHAR) nominating committee.

In September 2015, Prof. Filippo Drago has been appointed as chairman of the Neuropsychopharmacology Section of International Union of Basic and Clinical Pharmacology.[2]

Filippo Drago is author of several patents in the field of pharmacology and of more than 380 papers published in peer-reviewed journals.[3]

Career

Filippo Drago is a Professor of Pharmacology and Director of the Department of Biomedical and Biotechnological Sciences at the University of Catania, Italy.[4] He obtained the Medical Doctor Degree in 1978 in the same University and obtained a PhD in Pharmacology in 1982 at the University of Utrecht, in the Netherlands, working with David de Wied.[1]

Drago's main research interests are in the fields of Ocular Pharmacology and Neuropsychopharmacology. He was a visiting scientist at Utrecht University, Szeged University (Hungary), Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel, the Department of Psychiatry in the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (USA).[4]

In the last decade he has also worked in the field of Pharmacovigilance and Pharmacoeconomics. He was a member of the Scientic Board of the Italian institutional drug agency Agenzia Italiana del Farmaco (AIFA) from 2004 to 2009[5] and is a member of the Board for Pricing and Reimbursement of AIFA since 2012.[6] He was the Director of the International PhD Program in Neuropharmacology (2002-2013) and he is the director of the Master Course in Drug Regulatory Affairs at the University of Catania's Medical School.[7]

Drago has been President of EPHAR for the years 2012-2014.[1]

He is also the President of the Italian branch of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO), IT-ARVO.[8] and was awarded the "Silver Fellow" medal by ARVO at the 2014 ARVO annual meeting in Orlando.[9]

In 2014, Filippo Drago was awarded the Order of International Merit of Blood, by the International Federation of Blood Donor Organizations.[10]

During the 17th World Congress of Basic and Clinical Pharmacology in Cape Town, South Africa, Filippo Drago was announced among the recipients of the Rodolfo Paoletti Medal for Distinction in European Pharmacology.[11]

In 2015, Filippo Drago has been elected Vice President of the Association for Ocular Pharmacology and Therapeutics (AOPT), an organization that welcomes members from disciplines related to ocular pharmacology and its therapeutic applications.[12]
