Fionn Whitehead is an English actor. He stars in the 2017 war film Dunkirk, directed by Christopher Nolan.

Background

Whitehead is a native of London.[1] Whitehead was born in 1996 or 1997.[2] He was named after Irish folk legend Fionn mac Cumhaill.[3] Whitehead grew up in Richmond, London. He lived in an artistic household, with his father Tim Whitehead being a jazz musician.[4] Growing up, he considered a career in breakdancing but changed to acting.[5] He began acting at the Orange Tree Theatre when he was 13 years old, then went to Richmond College and entered the National Youth Theatre's summer course.[6] By 2015, he was an aspiring actor who worked at a coffee shop in Waterloo, London. He starred in the 2016 British miniseries HIM.[2] He also acted in a stage performance of Glenn Waldron's Natives.[7]

He auditioned for Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk and was surprised to be cast as the film's main protagonist. Nolan compared Whitehead to "a young" Tom Courtenay. After Dunkirk, Whitehead will appear in the film The Children Act opposite Emma Thompson and Stanley Tucci.[2] Whitehead was also cast to star in director Sebastian Schipper's drama Caravan, which is in development.[8]

Whitehead is signed with the agency UTA.[7]
