Fist Fight is a 2017 American comedy film directed by Richie Keen and written by Van Robichaux and Evan Susser. The film stars Ice Cube, Charlie Day, Christina Hendricks, Jillian Bell and Tracy Morgan and follows two teachers who plan to fight each other after one of them gets fired.

The film premiered in Los Angeles on February 13, 2017, and was released in the United States on February 17, 2017.

Premise

After high school teacher Andy Campbell accidentally gets his colleague Ron Strickland fired, Strickland challenges him to an after school fight.

Cast

Production

In December 2013, the project was announced that New Line Cinema was developing a comedy from writers Van Robichaux and Evan Susser, titled Fist Fight.[9] On June 9, 2015, Ice Cube and Charlie Day were cast in the film, which 21 Laps Entertainment would produce along with its Shawn Levy with Billy Rosenberg, and Max Greenfield.[4] On July 10, Richie Keen was confirmed to be the director of the film, while Dan Cohen would be the producer also.[10] On September 15, 2015, Jillian Bell and Dean Norris were cast in the film.[7] On September 21, 2015, Tracy Morgan, JoAnna Garcia, and Dennis Haysbert joined the film.[6] On September 25, 2015, Christina Hendricks was added to the cast.[5] Kym Whitley was also confirmed to star.[8]

Principal photography on the film began on September 28, 2015, in Atlanta, Georgia,[11][12] which ended on November 23, 2015.[13]

Reception

Box office

In the United States and Canada, Fist Fight opened on February 17, 2017, alongside A Cure for Wellness and The Great Wall, and is projected to gross $15–20 million from 3,184 theaters in its opening weekend.[14]

Critical response

On Rotten Tomatoes the film has an approval rating of 32% based on 57 reviews, and an average rating of 3.8/10. The site's critical consensus reads, "Fist Fight boasts a surplus of comedic muscle but flails lazily, and far too few of its jokes land with enough force to register."[15] On Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating, the film has a score 38 out of 100, based on 21 critics, indicating "generally unfavorable reviews".[16] Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of "B" on an A+ to F scale.[17]
