Fist of Fury 1991 (新精武門1991) is a 1991 Hong Kong comedy film directed by Cho Chung-sing, and starring Stephen Chow in the lead role.[1] Aside from a few parodied scenes, including the dojo fight where the Japanese man is forced to eat the sign, the film bears no other similarities to the Bruce Lee film, Fist of Fury, except in title only. A sequel, "Fist of Fury 1991 II", was released the following year.
Synopsis
Chow stars as Lau Ching, a mainland country boy hoping to earn a living in Hong Kong, in same timeline as God of Gamblers, confirmed by a brief cameo by the Saint of Gamblers (also portrayed by Chow) and his uncle.
Upon reaching Hong Kong, he finds his luggage stolen, but soon becomes fast friends with the thief, Smart. Together, they try to improve their financial situation through various odd jobs, until Smart discovers Ching's special ability, his extremely strong right arm, and then convinces him to enter a MMA tournament in the hopes of winning the prize money.
The two soon learn that they need to be registered with a school in order to compete. While trying to enter Chiu Tung's School, an underground fighter who conduct illegal mob-fighting. They encountered Master Fok Wan of Fok's school, a veteran martial artist with superb skills despite suffering from an illness. Realizing Lau and Smart's good-in-nature, Master Fok decided to take them as students, learning under the spiteful First-student Kwok Wai and Master Fok's daughter, Fok Man. It didn't take Lau and Smart too long to begin earning beautiful Man's affection. As they race to deliver their love letters, Man mistaken Smart's letter being Lau's and obliviously admits to Smart that she loves him as a brother. No longer able to pursue her, Smart decides to play cupid for Lau and Man and be the middle man for their love letters.
After spending few months as Master Fok's student, Lau finally reunites with his brother as he was attempting to steal from the Fok school and witnessing Kwok's attempted rape of Man. Kwok promptly refutes this allegation and accuses Lau of committing both crimes. Framed by the circumstances, Master Fok had no choice but to expel Lau and Smart out of the school. Lau and Smart split shortly after Lau misconstrues Smart's intentions as jealousy.
Guided to four elderly underground teachers by his brother, Lau decided to join the MMA tournament under alias of New Jingwu School. With refined skills and rigorous training, Lau breakthrough the match by overcoming various foes like his former master, Chiu, as aloof Smart watch his advances secretly. Master Fok, who had overheard Kwok Wai's betrayal prior to the match, admits his mistake to Lau Ching in the semi-finals and gives Lau his blessings if he were to pursue Man. After a long and honorable fight, Lau overcomes his former master. In the locker room, Master Fok disavows Kwok and expels him from the school. Unable to convince Master Fok otherwise, Kwok Wai mercilessly chokes his own master. Weakened by the illness and his fight with Lau, Master Fok is unable to fight back and dies.
Before the final match, Kwok claims Master Fok succumbed to the injuries from the previous match and challenges Lay to a fight-to-death final. In the final round, Lau is unable to fight Kwok under the perceived guilt of having killed Master Fok and relents to Kwok's barrage. In the locker rooms, unable to bear the guilt, one of Kwok Wai's lackeys confesses the truth to Man, who was then prevented from leaving by the other rogue students. Overhearing the commotion, Smart intervenes and serves as a diversion for Man makes her to the main stage. When she arrives, Lau is almost beaten to a pulp by Kwok. She then cheers Lau on and clears up Kwok's lies. No longer having to hold back, Lau easily overcomes Kwok and deals a flurry of punches with his right fist, winning him the tournament.
After the tournament, Lau and Man see Smart limping out the stadium's front door with an assortment of injuries. Lau apologizes for having mistaken Smart's actions and they make amends for the sake of their friendship.
