Food Angel (Chinese: 惜食堂) is a food rescue organization in Hong Kong. It was launched in 2011 by Bo Charity Foundation and supported by local and international food donors, sponsors and charity partners.

Food Angel has independent offices, kitchens and community center based in Kowloon and Hong Kong Island. This program rescues approximately 4,000 kg of edible surplus food from the food industry daily and redistribute about 6,000 meal boxes to the underprivileged in the community.[1]

Objectives

Food Angel aims at reducing food waste at source, alleviating hunger, relieving poverty and educate the next generation. The idea of Food Angel originated from the alleviating the pressure on landfills in Hong Kong. When the organization started to develop, it began extending to solve other food related social problems like poverty.[2]

Currently, Food Angel has more than 150 partners who work hand in hand to contribute to the betterment of our society. Food Angel also contacted a number of celebrities to support their organization. They hope by large scale promotion, they could raise citizens’ attention to food wastage as well as the importance of food waste recycling which they are focusing lately. Eventually, they hope there will be less food waste and a harmonious society can be built where people would volunteer to give a hand to people in need. Their vision is not only reducing food waste, but also making everyone in Hong Kong have 3 meals a day.

Services

Food Angel rescues surplus food in order to relieve the landfills pressure in Hong Kong. Food Angel collects surplus food from suppliers, supermarket, wet market and donation partners during daytime and at night. Food Angel receives food donations, including fresh food, canned/non-perishable food, oils & seasonings, cooked foods and frozen/chilled foods, to prepare meal boxes then distribute to people in need such as elderly, low-income families with young children and homeless people. The meal box that Food Angel made is suitable for elderly.[3]

Besides distributing meal boxes in the center, Food Angel will also visit the elderly and deliver meal boxes to those disabled. Food Angel provides elderly care workshop, for example, literacy classes, Chinese opera and Erhu performance.

Fodo Angel receives support from more than 60 companies or organizations.[2]

Bread Angel

Collecting unsold bakery products from bakeries at closing time and then distribute to beneficiaries to consume next day.

Corporate Angel

Corporate Angel aims at supporting Food Angel’s campaign “Waste Not, Hunger Not” to corporate volunteers to perform corporate social responsibilities. It organizes internal fundraising events to raise fund for Food Angel’s program.

Green Angel

A program offers academic year long school-based educational activities, including Introductory Talk, a Puppet Show, an Animation, Green Lessons, Food Up-cycling Workshops, Field Trips, an Inter-schools Competition and a Rewarding Scheme. Green Angel aims at teaching young generation to cherish food and preserve the natural resources on earth.

Outreach Angel

Distributing free nutritious hot meal boxes, non-perishable food packs and loving care to singletons and deprived elderly living in the Eastern district. Outreach Angel provides home delivery service and regular home visits to the singleton, physically frail or disabled elderly five days a week.

Community Angel

Providing free dine-in food assistance service in Sham Shui Po District for the vulnerable and frail elderly who aged 65 or above.

Timeline & News

Food Angel was set up in 2011, and started several campaign in the meantime.

Different Newspaper has post news about Food Angel’s activities since 2012. Most of them are about giving lunch box to the people in need, for instance, they tried to turn food waste into lunch box, and it had been introduced in Headline 2015, April 1.[3]

The three events of Canstruction Hong Kong had been introduced in different newspaper, such as Apple daily, Oriental daily, Skypost, etc. at 2015.[4][5][6]
