Fresh 92.7 (call sign: 5FBI) is a not-for-profit community radio station based in Adelaide, Australia broadcasting at a frequency of 92.7 MHz. The station, whose General Manager is Troy Sincock, is designed for the young people of Adelaide, and its fundamental operating principle is to "promote all genres and age categories of youth music and to expose new genres and forms of music that the youth of Adelaide enjoy." The station has a reputation for playing a lot of electronic dance and house as well as hosting programs on various social issues. On air the station is referred as "Fresh 92-7". In October 2010, Fresh moved into new, state-of-the-art, digital studios in Adelaide's fashionable East End.
Plans for Fresh 92.7 were laid when three young people were visiting Melbourne in January 1997 and heard a youth radio station there (Hitz FM) and agreed that Adelaide could benefit from a similar broadcasting concept. They formed a non-profit association and charter, and assembled a team of volunteers, including members with experience in various broadcasting professions. Many of these volunteers originally used to run specialist dance music shows on the radio station Coast FM 88.7 and moved over to Fresh FM after its founding.
Fresh commenced broadcasting with an Australian Broadcasting Authority "Temporary Community Broadcaster" licence on 17 March 1998. Initially the station broadcast at 92.9 MHz in a frequency-sharing agreement with the Italian language radio station Radio Televisione Italiana, before later moving to another frequency at 92.7 MHz. On 22 August 2002, Fresh received a full-time broadcasting licence from the ABA.
Fresh 92.7 remains a not-for-profit radio station, supported by almost 10,000 subscribers—or listener-sponsors—who voluntarily contribute funds to keep the station operational- Playing a mix of Dance, R&B, Hip Hop and Drum and Bass as well as Hardcore Techno, Fresh 92.7 has gained popularity not only in Adelaide but throughout Australia and the world via a live Internet Radio stream. Fresh 92.7 has also released a number of compilation CDs containing popular songs played on air.
On 19 February 2016, the University of Adelaide's Vice-Chancellor Warren Bebbington announced a new deal was signed on 18 February 2016 with Fresh 92.7 that will secure the future of Radio Adelaide as an independent not-for-profit organisation from July 2016. Under the new arrangement, Fresh 92.7 will take Radio Adelaide under its wing until a new organisation is registered and Radio Adelaide will temporarily relocate to Fresh 92.7’s studios in Adelaide’s East End before both move to a new site. As part of the arrangement, Radio Adelaide will continue to provide practical training components to university students for the University's Bachelor of Media degree. It remains unclear how much of Radio Adelaide's current facilities and capacity will be retained in the shift, as Radio Adelaide's schedule tended to be eclectic with a mix of ethnically diverse programming, access groups, education and arts coverage. Management at Fresh 92.7 emphasised that neither station's programming will be affected by the arrangement. The transfer of the licence is awaiting final approval from broadcasting authority ACMA.
The breakfast show of Fresh 92.7, 'Freshly Squeezed', is the flagship program of the station aimed at capturing an audience for the rest of the day. The show runs from 6:00am to 9:00am weekday mornings. In the afternoons, 'Kaboom' airs from 4pm to 6pm. News bulletins are presented every half-hour between 7am and 9am, and 4:30pm and 6pm.
