Gaël Andonian (Armenian: Կաէլ Անտոնեան; born 7 February 1995) is a French-born Armenian footballer who plays as a centre-back for Marseille B and represents the Armenian national team.

Club career

Andonian is a youth exponent from Marseille. He was first called into a matchday squad for their 1–0 win away at Nancy on 16 September 2012, remaining an unused substitute.[1] His only other call-up that season was on 6 December, again unused as Marseille lost 0–3 away to AEL Limassol in the UEFA Europa League, both teams already eliminated.[2]

He made his professional debut in a 2–1 Ligue 1 home win against Lens on 2 November 2014, replacing Florian Thauvin for the last 10 minutes.[3]

On 21 October 2015, having taken no part in Marseille's season, Andonian was loaned to Ligue 2 club Dijon for the remainder of the season.[4] He made six appearances in Ligue 2 as the team from Burgundy won promotion, scoring his first professional goal as a last-minute equaliser in a 2–2 draw at Niort on 8 January 2016, and contributing to the own goal that was their other strike in the game.[5] Additionally, Andonian made two appearances in the Coupe de la Ligue, and two appearances in the Coupe de France.

On 27 January 2017, Andonian was loaned to Superleague Greece club Veria F.C. for the remainder of the season.[6] Andonian made 10 appearances for Veria, before his loan expired, and he returned to Marseille on June 30 2017.[7]

International career

In 2011, Andonian played two friendlies for France under-16, both goalless draws against Slovenia on 5 and 7 April.[8]

On 26 February 2015, the president of the Armenian Football Federation Ruben Hayrapetyan announced that Andonian would arrive in the Armenian capital Yerevan on 21 March to receive Armenian citizenship and officially join the Armenia national football team.[9]

Eight days later he received his first international cap, playing the full 90 minutes against Albania in a 1–2 defeat at the Elbasan Arena in UEFA Euro 2016 qualifying.[10]
