Gary Raymond
Gary Raymond (born 20 April 1935) is an English film, television, and theatre actor.[1][2]
Biography
Gary Barrymore Raymond was born in Brixton, London, to theatrical parents, both of whom were Variety Artistes. The youngest of three brothers, Gary and his brother Robin are twins, Robin being twenty minutes older. Gary's mother died of tuberculosis within nine months of he and his brother's birth, and the two were then in the care of a nanny. When Gary was eleven years old, he won a scholarship to the Gateway School and remained there until he graduated at age sixteen. After training at The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, Gary worked with the Royal Shakespeare Company in the 1950s, playing roles such as MacBeth, Oberon, and Claudius, as well as numerous others. He made his film debut as Charles Stuart (King Charles II) in the British classic swashbuckling film, The Moonraker (1958). He soon followed up with his role as Cliff Lewis in Tony Richardson's film adaptation of John Osborne's Look Back in Anger (1958), opposite Richard Burton and Claire Bloom.[3][4] Subsequent notable films included: Suddenly, Last Summer (1959), in which Gary Raymond appeared with Katharine Hepburn, and as son to Mercedes McCambridge and Elizabeth Taylor as his sister, The Millionairess (1960), where Gary played Sophia Loren's husband, El Cid (1961), the legendary epic film in which Gary played opposite Charlton Heston and Sophia Loren, The Playboy of the Western World (1962), which Gary starred in, Jason and the Argonauts (1963), the cult-classic fantasy film, as well as The Greatest Story Ever Told (1965), where Gary portrayed the apostle Simon bar Jonah who became Peter the Rock.[5]
Gary's fine speaking voice was also well suited for singing, as he played one of the lead roles in the 1964 Original London Cast production of the hit Broadway musical, She Loves Me. He also had roles in many other theatrical musicals including Irma La Douce,Treasure Island, The Sound of Music, and Grand Hotel.
Gary Raymond is also well known for his role as Sergeant Jack Moffitt in the late-1960s American television show, The Rat Patrol (1966–68)[6] The series, despite running only two seasons, remains highly popular to this day. Gary continued acting on film and TV, and has been married since 1961 to actress Delena Kidd, with whom he has three children; Matthew, Sophie, and the youngest being actress Emily Raymond.
