Controversies

After Glamour announced that it would be giving an award to Caitlyn Jenner, in November 2015 the husband of New York police officer Moira Smith, who helped rescue over 100 people during the 9/11 attacks before being killed in the collapse of the World Trade Center and was the only woman among the 23 New York Police Department officers who died on 11 September 2001, returned the "Woman of the Year" award that Glamour had awarded her. James Smith FedEx'd the award to the magazine and told Cyndi Lieve, the magazine's editor-in-chief in an open letter that, "I was shocked and saddened to learn that Glamour has just named Bruce Jenner 'Woman of the Year.' Was there no woman in America, or the rest of the world, more deserving than this man? I can only guess that this was a publicity stunt meant to resuscitate a dying medium. After discussing this slap in the face to the memory of our Hero with my family, I have decided to return Moira's award to Glamour magazine."[1]
