There are four railway lines linking Glasgow with Edinburgh. These are, from north to south:

Historically, the first line between Glasgow and Edinburgh was the Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway, equivalent to today's Glasgow to Edinburgh via Falkirk Line

At a conference in 2009, major upgrades were proposed for completion by 2016.[1] The first of these was the Airdrie and Bathgate Project, completed in late 2010. Another notable proposal is the electrification of the Glasgow to Edinburgh via Falkirk Line by 2016 and the Shotts Line by 2019.
