Global Mall at the Crossings, formerly Hickory Hollow Mall, is a regional indoor shopping mall in Antioch, Tennessee, a neighborhood of Nashville. The mall was built in 1978. In 1982, a JCPenney and several other stores were added. Another expansion project in 1991 resulted in a new building for Dillard's, with a mall expansion built within the former Dillard's location. The two-level mall is built in a cross pattern, with four wings situated around a central hub. The Food Court, an original feature of the mall, is situated within the elbow of the former Sears and JCPenney wings.
Nashville State Community College purchased the old Dillard's building and converted it into a satellite campus, which opened on August 22, 2012.[1][2] The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County purchased the old JCPenney building and its adjacent parking lot, and has announced plans to convert into a community center, dual ice rinks, parkland, and a branch library.[3][4]
Decline
Hickory Hollow thrived as a regional retail center through the 1980s and 1990s. In the early 2000s, as the neighborhood's demographics shifted, many of the mall's well-known national tenants began to close their locations, and traffic at the mall began to dip.
JC Penney left the mall in 2006. It was replaced with Steve & Barry's, which closed due to bankruptcy in 2009. Dillard's closed its Hickory Hollow store in August 2008. General economic decline and competition from newer nearby shopping centers in Mt. Juliet, Smyrna, and Murfreesboro (all of which were considered part of Hickory Hollow's trading area) are all speculated as factors that have resulted in a drop in retailers and per-square-foot sales.
On December 27, 2011, Sears Holdings announced Sears in Hickory Hollow Mall would shut down its Hickory Hollow Mall store in early 2012. Within a few days of that announcement, Macy's also announced it would close its location in early spring, along with 5 underperforming stores, leaving Hickory Hollow Mall without an anchor store as of May 2012. Also, it was announced in April 2012 that tenant Best Buy would close in May 2012 as part of the company's plan to eliminate it's underperforming stores, leaving Hickory Hollow Mall without a anchor tenant or big box tenant.
On June 1, 2012, the mall's owners (CBL & Associates) informed most tenants they had 30 days to vacate the property, in order to begin redevelopment. Roughly a dozen tenants were allowed to stay.[5] The mall's website was blanked sometime shortly thereafter.
The mall, except for Electronic Express and the anchor stores, was sold in October 2012 to another developer.[6] In January 2013, it was renamed Global Mall at the Crossings. Though the mall was never officially shuttered, it reopened with new retailers in May of 2013 after ten months of redevelopment. [7][8]
