The Guatemalan Screech-owl (Megascops guatemalae) is a species of owl in the Strigidae family. Currently it has 7 recognized subspecies.[1]

With a length of 20 to 23 cm, it is a smaller than most other screech-owls. Its plumage is reddish-gray, and unlike other owls of the same genus, it has feathered feet. The tail is relatively long, the underside has conspicuous longitudinal stripes and some horizontal stripes. Its face is surrounded by a dark feather edge and it has relatively short ear tufts. The eyes are yellow. The beak has an olive-greenish color.

Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical dry forests, subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests, subtropical or tropical moist montane forests, and heavily degraded former forest.

It is found in Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Panama, Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Ecuador, Peru,Bolivia, and Brazil.

Subspecies

A number of its subspecies are often separated as Vermiculated Screech-owl (M. vermiculatus), and occasionally even additional species such as the Rio Napo Screech-Owl, M. (g./v.) napensis. If only a single species is recognized, the common name "Vermiculated Screech-owl" applies, but the scientific name remains the older M. guatemalae

Currently, the Megascops guatemalae has seven recognized subspecies:[1]
