HP Touchsmart tx is a brand of notebook computers from Hewlett Packard introduced in February 2007. These notebooks are designed for Windows Vista and the current model, tx2 is eligible for a free upgrade to Windows 7, if purchased between June 26, 2009 and January 31, 2010.

Design
The series is delivered with the HP Imprint Finish. The current finish is called "Reaction". The form factor is referred to as "convertible", that is, the screen can be rotated to use the notebook as a slate with the included stylus or upto four fingers. The current model has a glossy, black plastic casing and a perforated touchpad. The speakers are located near the hinge, on the screen, as is the webcam, mic and optional fingerprint reader. The standard 6-cell battery juts out to form a hand-grip, and the DVD drive can be replaced with a plastic "weight-saver". The indicator lights on this notebook are all white, and can switch to orange to indicate a change in status.

Criticism
Within a few months of release of the tx1000 series, numerous technical failures were reported on internet blogs and review sites. The complaints ranged from the failure of the web cam, intermittent audio operation, intermittent wireless connectivity, failure to resume from hibernation, overheating and booting problems. Some of these problems were addressed in a timely manner with driver updates, however, some users were still left having to turn the notebook on and off repeatedly, until it booted up and some were left with a non-working "bricked" unit. HP's customer service department reportedly handled customer complaints inappropriately. The nVidia graphics card's connector has been known to burn out due to overheating, a problem which has been repeated recently with nVidia's 8xxx line of notebook graphics in Apple computers.

With the release of the tx2000 and tx2500, the severity and frequency of problems seems to have reduced somewhat. The tx2, the current model, has markedly improved stability possibly attributable to the use of AMD's "Puma" platform later in the production run. The tx2's multi-touch capabilities have been commended when used with the Windows 7 Release Candidate, and it is possible HP might release another improved model, or expand touch capabilities to multiple models, with the impending release of Windows 7. However, the tx2's use of an n-Trig digitizer instead of a Wacom one (to enable multi-touch) resulted in a lack of pressure support in major graphics applications like Photoshop & Painter. This situation is unlikely to improve until a newer version of these programs is released.
