HTTP 2.0 is the next planned version of the HTTP network protocol used by the World Wide Web. HTTP 2.0 is being developed by the Hypertext Transfer Protocol Bis (httpbis) working group of the IETF.[1] HTTP 2.0 would be the first new version of the HTTP protocol since HTTP 1.1.

Goals for HTTP 2.0 include asynchronous connection multiplexing, header compression, and request-response pipelining, while maintaining full backwards compatibility with the transaction semantics of HTTP 1.1.

As of 2012, work being presented for consideration by the httpbis working group includes Google's currently-deployed SPDY protocol, and Microsoft's HTTP Speed+Mobility proposal.[2] Many of the architectural approaches in these protocols were explored earlier by the World Wide Web Consortium's HTTP-NG working group. Work on the HTTP-NG project was suspended in 1998.[3]
