Hokky Situngkir, born 7 February 1978[1] is an Indonesian scientist for complexity theory in Surya University and founder of the research institute for social complexity research, Bandung Fe Institute. He is known with wide spectrum of reseearch, from his works on the aspects of fractal geometry in Indonesian Batik,[2] mathematical aspects of Indonesian traditional folk songs, mathematical aspects in the architecture of Borobudur,[3] to the Indonesian stock market analysis with econophysics[4] with Indonesian senior physicist, Yohanes Surya. Hokky Situngkir is also known as one of the initiators of the first Indonesian digital library for traditional culture website Perpustakaan Digital Budaya Indonesia with open participation from public[5] For his works on batik and many other traditional cultures, he has been known as one of the prominent inventors and innovators in Indonesia[6]
Econophysics in Indonesia
Working with the pioneer of econophysics in Indonesia, Yohanes Surya, Situngkir accomplished some works on financial market specific to the trading and investment in Indonesia Stock Exchange. Their works are on implementing statistical mechanics and complexity theory in Indoesian specific financial risk management, trading stragies, and eventually the optimization and observational methods for surveillance due to abnormal returns in the stock market indexes. In 2005, they published their works on econophysics in Indonesian, entitled "Aplikasi Fisika dalam Analisis Keuangan" for further development of the subjects later in the country.
Fractal Batik
Situngkir's work on social complexity in Indonesia has brought him to the elaboration on how Indonesian traditional people did geometry by analyzing thousands of Indonesian batik motifs.[7] He demonstrated that batik is not a mere ornaments but delivered as the way traditional people expressed their philosophy, more like a masterpieces, equivalent to the modern European arts in the renaissance era, e.g.: Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, and Michelangelo. His research showed how traditional batik can be seen as "generative art" in the era of pre-computation. By modeling the generative process of batik in computational tessellation and mathematical iterative design processes, he showed how the complex designs of batik can be emerged from simple patterns of basic motifs. The mathematical algorithmic processes has now made computation possible to be employed in the production of traditional batik motifs without leaving behind the way traditional people did in the ancient times, i.e.: the computer-aided batik designs. This computation and software has solved problems by reducing times for generating complicated batik motifs.[8]
After batik, he also demonstrated that the similar point of view can also be used to analyze Indonesian traditional weaving patterns, ornaments in Indonesian vernacular architectures, and the hypotheses for the kind of "geometry" used by ancient people built the mega structure Borobudur Temple.[9]
Indonesian Digital Library for Traditional Culture
Situngkir's idea is to treat the diversity of Indonesian traditional culture as information, made it public digitally, and thus on which data sciences are applied upon. His research on complexity in Indonesian traditional culture has brought to the establishment of the initiative to build the first online Indonesian Digital Library of Traditional Culture that is opened for the participation of Indonesian public, named Perpustakaan Digital Budaya Indonesia (PDBI). He also initiated the establishment of youth community for the participation in the open digital library, the "Sobat Budaya" community. From this cultural heritage data collection, he has promoted the new modern innovations based on Indonesian traditional culture, by the mapping of Indonesian batik motifs, the mathematical mapping of Indonesian folk songs, the mapping of Indonesian traditional food and beverages, batik software and applications.[10][11]
While doing daily routine of research, he is also actively supervising younger researchers as mentor in the Center for Young Scientists,[12] Surya University.
