Biography

Early life

Hua Chenyu was born on February 7, 1990 in the city of Shiyan. He lived with his father during his childhood, who got married again when he was 10. He began to learn flute at the age of 6 and started to learn piano in the fifth grade when he realized flute was not enough to express his point of view. He soon became a master in playing piano and wrote his first song at twelve.[1]

After finishing middle school, he moved to Wuhan alone to received more professional music training. In 2010, he entered Wuhan Conservatory of Music, where he studied vocal performance and gained more stage experience as the vocalist of a college rock band, Conseer. At the end of his period in the conservatory, he made definitive steps in order to start his musical career.[2]

Super Boy

Shortly before ending his stance in the conservatory, in 2013, Hua entered the casting for the Super Boy (contest) contest. During this TV Show produced by Hunan TV, the young singer started his rise among the contestants. There, he started developing his own style. He named psychedelic rock as his favourite music style, although his style has also been influenced by mainstream pop and classical music. Apart from his unique style, Hua was also praised for his voice, charisma and vocal expressivity.

When the contest was finished, Hua Chenyu won with the majority of the votes. Short after his success, he took part in the Super Boy Tour, in which he toured the major Chinese cities. After this tour, the singer started his music career and producing his first solo full-length album. He was signed to EE-Media, the giant Mainland Chinese record label where the most of the Super Boy and Super Girl contestants are linked to. After an enormous production effort by his company, he released his album named "Quasimodo's Gift" in 2014.[3] [4][5]

The success of his debut album was enormous and topped the Chinese music charts in a short time space. Quasimodo's Gift was an album which featured the personal style that Hua had been developing. Psychodelic rock with Classical Music influenced songs, and some electronic touches were the distinctive footprint of his album. The album contained emotions ranging from Love and Hate to Anger. The first single of the album was the song "Why nobody fights?". Although that song only repeated the title sentence, it was a hit.[6]

Success

Thanks to the success of his debut, Hua performed in the CCTV New Year's Gala 2014, which also boosted his popularity. After that the singer participated in the soundtrack for the film Up in the Wind and started touring different cities across China in his promotion tour of his album. Short after that, he was chosen by ALO, a South Korean glasses manufacturer as the Chinese image model for the Chinese customers.[7][8]

That year, the Italian branch of the magazine Vogue made an interview to Hua, in which he talked about his career, his musical influences and interests. The same magazine considered Hua Chenyu as an icon of the Chinese youth.[9] He performed in many events and in many variety shows of private TV broadcasters. Many months after the release of his debut album in Mainland China, Hua released his album in Taiwan where he met also a great expectation.[10]

In 2015, Hua Chenyu started preparing his second album, also under EE-Media. He performed in the New Year's gala of Liaoning TV and released "Ephemera" the first single of his upcoming second album, which was finally named as "May fly". This album, which was considered as more mature and also darker and more electronic album was also received with a great interest. Massive concerts in Shanghai and Beijing among other cities, were held and again, topped the music charts in Mainland China and Taiwan.[11]
