Huautepec is a town and municipality in Oaxaca in south-western Mexico. The municipality covers an area of km². It is part of the Teotitlán District in the north of the Cañada Region.As of 2005, the municipality had a total population of 5,672.[1]

Geography and ecology

This municipality is located at north of the capital at 257 kilometers of distance and at 1660 meters above sea level, it belongs to the Teotitlán de Flores Magón district. The total area of the municipality is 35.72 square kilometers. It has the Quiotepec river at territorial boundary of the municipality of Chiquihuitlan. this river serves for the planting and agriculture of the place. The weather is generally temperate all year round with summer rains and winds crossing from north to south. At present Huatepec has not many natural resources. in the past counted on with forests areas but there is no more because of the deforestation. The only resource that it has is the river Quiotepec that is used for the residents needs.[1]

Socio-demographic profile

This municipality counts with a total of 5,672 citizens. At present young citizens migrate to other latitudes like Tehuacan in Puebla and Tuxtepex in Oaxaca. Religion in the municipality is high. According to the INEGI in 2000 there are 5,474 catholic people having only 129 people that doesn't have any religion. There is a total of 1,243 households out of which 1.230 are private. Most people have built their houses with basic construction materials such as concrete, concrete block and sheet, you can still find some adobe houses and palm. The town is located 3 miles on a dirt road which (there are no freeways) leads onto road Huautla - Tuxtepec, it is the only direct route to the municipality. There are other dirt roads that put the town with its various agencies and communities.

Economic activity

Agriculture: There is an important production of oranges and bananas sold in their markets. There are also plantations of mainly maize and beans, which are the basic grains produced, finally there are also small coffee producers which lead to an economic importance.

Livestock: Primarily engaged in raising sheep, goats and poultry. It has cattle in very low percentage.
