Hudson's Bay High School is located in Vancouver, Washington, USA, in the Central Park area of Vancouver. Hudson's Bay is known for having two strong magnet programs, as well as a children's day care and district-wide mothers transportation program. It is located across from Clark College, where many Bay students participate in the Running Start program. The school mascot is the Eagle, and the school colors are black and gold. The school had 1,542 enrolled students in the 2006/2007 school year[1]. The current school principal is Bill Oman.

Among other extracurriculars, Bay offers ASB, Jazz Band, Orchestra, Band, Jazz Choir, Choir, Engineering and Science Team, Science Decathlon, DECA, Knowledge Bowl, Drama Club, Key Club, Flight Crew, French Club, Mock Trial, Debate Team, Teens Against Tobacco Use, Career Choices Interns, FFA, Skills USA, Gay Straight Alliance, Tokyohop Japanese Animation, Future Business Leaders of America, and National Honors Society.

Magnet Programs

Hudson's Bay offers two magnet programs—Careers in Education, and Habitat and Civil Engineering.

Careers in Education

The Careers in Education magnet program prepares students for future careers in the fields of child development, family psychology, teaching, and instructional theory. Students take courses focused on these topics, and apply their learning through direct interaction with infants and children.[2]

Habitat and Civil Engineering

The Habitat and Civil Engineering magnet is a four-year program that offers in-depth education to those students planning careers in urban horticulture, landscaping, ecology, city planning, civil engineering, and architecture. Students apply their learning working in Hudson Baby's horticulture center, nursery, and science park, and through internships and work experience.[3]

Community Service and The Mr. Hudson's Bay Pageant

The Mr. Hudson's Bay pageant is a mock Miss America Pageant designed to raise money for Doernbecher Children's Hospital. Every year, 12 senior boys are nominated and voted on by the senior class and teachers to compete in the pageant. The group works together to coordinate dance, talent, swimwear, casual wear, and formal wear portions of the competition. Contestants spend four months raising money individually and as groups. The contestant that brings in the most money receives the title of Mr. Hudson's Bay.

Mr. Hudson's Bay is part of a larger community service program at the school. Since the early 1990s, Hudson's Bay has consistently been a top donor to Doernbecher Children's Hospital through the Kids Making Miracles Program[4], having raised over $500,000 to date. The pageant is known for consistently breaking previous year records. The 2006 contestants raised $92,733.17. The 2007 contestants raised a total of $65,748.90, but a surprise donation of $72,965 on behalf of the Eleanor Copps Trust in the amount brought the total to $138,443.90 shattering 2006's record.
