The Hyundai U engine is a series of three or four-cylinder diesel engines made for automotive applications by the Hyundai Kia Automotive Group. The U series of engines includes the smallest automotive diesel engines produced by Hyundai.[1]

1.1 L

The 1.1L U diesel engine is a 3-cylinder version of the 1.5L U series unit and is made with cast iron block and aluminum cylinder head with chain driven DOHC with 4 valves per cylinder, Bosch common rail direct injection (CRDi), variable geometry turbocharger (VGT) and intake air swirl control. Bore and Stroke are 75 mm x 84.5 mm. It creates an impressive 74 hp (55 kW; 75 PS) at 4,000 rpm and 112 lb⋅ft (152 N⋅m) of torque at 2,000 rpm. It is one of Hyundai's most efficient engines using only 4.2L/100 km (56 MPG), and emits a minuscule 112 g/km of CO2. The engine also incorporates a 1½ engine order balance shaft mounted under the crankshaft driven by helical gears to manage engine vibration. It is currently fitted to the Kia Picanto, Kia Rio, Hyundai i10 and i20 models.

1.4 L

The 1.4L U diesel engine utilizes four cylinders and is made with cast iron block and aluminum cylinder head with chain driven DOHC with 4 valves per cylinder, Bosch common rail direct injection (CRDi), variable geometry turbocharger (VGT) and intake air swirl control. It is a reduced stroke version of the 1.5L U series with Bore and Stroke at 75 mm x 79 mm. It produces 74 hp (55 kW; 75 PS) and 162 lb⋅ft (220 N⋅m) of torque in base Hyundai i20 models and 89 hp (66 kW; 90 PS) and 162 lb⋅ft (220 N⋅m) of torque in higher spec Hyundai i20 and Kia Rio models.

1.5 L

The 1.5L U diesel engine utilizes four cylinders and is made with cast iron block and aluminum cylinder head with chain driven DOHC with 4 valves per cylinder, Bosch common rail direct injection (CRDi), variable geometry turbocharger (VGT) and intake air swirl control. Bore and Stroke are 75 mm x 84.5 mm. It produces 89 hp (66 kW; 90 PS) and 159 lb⋅ft (216 N⋅m) torque in the Hyundai Getz and 108 hp (81 kW; 109 PS) at 4,000 rpm and 174 lb⋅ft (236 N⋅m) of torque at 2,000 rpm in the Kia Rio and higher spec Hyundai Getz models. Introduced in 2005 this engine replaced the VM Motori sourced 1.5L 3-cylinder common rail Diesel sold in the Hyundai Getz and Accent models and which was notably more unrefined.

1.6 L (D4FB)

The 1.6-litre U diesel engine (known as D4FB) from the Žilina (Slovakia) Kia factory is a bored-out version of the 1.5-litre U series engine (77.2 mm versus 75 mm). It was the "best in class" diesel engine in the world till now and present time. In 2009, it was refined to the 1.6 U2 version, with a new displacement, developing 126 hp (94 kW; 128 PS) and 195 lb⋅ft (264 N⋅m) of torque.[2]

Engine specification

  • Displacement: 1.6L (1582cc)
  • Bore x Stroke: 77.2mm x 84.5mm
  • Compression Ratio: 17.3:1
  • Power: 89 hp (66 kW; 90 PS) or 113 hp (84 kW; 115 PS)
  • Torque: 173 lb⋅ft (235 N⋅m) or 188 lb⋅ft (255 N⋅m)

  • Hyundai i30
  • Hyundai Accent
  • Hyundai Creta

1.7 L (D4FD)

The 1.7-litre U2 diesel engine (known as D4FD) was introduced at the 2010 Paris Motor Show. It produces 113 hp (84 kW; 115 PS) and 192 lb⋅ft (260 N⋅m) of torque.[3] This engine features chain driven DOHC with 4 valves per cylinder, common rail direct injection (CRDi), variable geometry turbocharger (VGT).

Hyundai U2 Engine specification

  • Displacement: 1.7L (1685cc)
  • Bore x Stroke: 77.2mm × 90mm
  • Compression Ratio: 17.0:1
  • Power: 84 kW (113 hp; 114 PS) or 100 kW (134 hp; 136 PS) @ 4000 rpm
  • Torque: 260 N⋅m (192 lb⋅ft) or 320 N⋅m (236 lb⋅ft) @ 2000-2500 rpm
