is the 3rd vowel in the Bengali alphabet (and by extension related scripts such as Assamese). This letter is used to represent the close front unrounded vowel and in the present day is pronounced almost identically to the character 'ঈ', except when distinctions are needed to prevent ambiguity between words of different origins.
