Ivan Estill Schottel (October 11, 1921 – August 21, 2000)[1] was an American football coach in the United States.
Coaching career
Benedictine
Schottel was the tenth head college football coach for the Benedictine Ravens located in Atchison, Kansas. He held that position for 10 seasons, from 1953 until 1962.His coaching record at Benedictine was 52 wins, 36 losses and 2 ties. As of the conclusion of the 2011 season, this ranks him #2 at Benedictine in total wins and #5 at the school in winning percentage (.589).[2]
Northwest Missouri State
Schottel was the 12th head football coach for the Northwest Missouri State University Bearcats located in Maryville, Missouri and he held that position for eight seasons, from 1963 until 1970. His career coaching record at Northwest Missouri State was 28 wins, 44 losses, and 1 ties. This ranks him sixth at Northwest Missouri State in total wins and 12th at Northwest Missouri State in winning percentage.[3]
Schottel was born in Cosby, Missouri and graduated King City High School in King City, Missouri. He attended Northwest Missouri and preflight training at St. Mary's College, Kansas where he played for the service team. He joined Army during World War II. After the war, Schottel played for the Detroit Lions as an end and defensive back in 1946 and 1948. He played in 16 games for the Lions, had four receptions for 147 yards and one touchdown. He had a 41.6 yard punting average.[4][5] An injury in 1948 ended his career. He began coaching at Benedictine College before coming to Northwest.
