Janez Avguštin Puhar (August 26, 1814 - August 7, 1864) was a Slovene priest, photographer, painter, and poet. He invented a process for making photographs on glass in 1841; it was recognized on June 17, 1852 in Paris by the Académie Nationale Agricole, Manufacturière et Commerciale.[1]

The "Janez Puhar Photo Society Kranj" is the oldest Slovene photographic society. It was established in 1910 and is based in Kranj.[2]

His grandniece was the pedagogue Helena Puhar, mother of the punk singer and sociologist Gregor Tomc and author and human rights activist Alenka Puhar.
