Jason Carthen Ph.D. (born November 16, 1970[1]) is a retired American football player, an academic, radio personality, author, and public speaker. He is President/CEO of Jason Carthen Enterprises LLC., and visiting Professor at Bethel University. Dr. Carthen is the creator and host of the hit Radio Show Discover the Leader in You™ that airs nationally each week on iHeart Radio and WHK1420. The show is on the Jason Carthen Enterprises Mobile Apps and is also syndicated on iTunes and Sticher Radio. He is the past host of the television shows Joy in our Town, and TBN's Praise the Lord.

Early life

Born in rural Decatur, Alabama, Carthen would experience very humble beginnings with many odds stacked against him. However, regardless of his circumstances he was still able to thrive because of his faith and an unlimited amount of resilience. A product of a single parent household Carthen would come to live in Toledo Ohio where he found success on both the playing field and in the classroom. Carthen graduated from Scott High School in Toledo, Ohio, in 1989..

High School Football Career

Overview

Carthen played on the offensive side of the ball while in High School as a Tight End where he received All City, All Conference and Honorable Mention All State recognition. Carthen also lettered in Basketball and Tennis during his high school career.

College Football Career

Overview

Carthen became one of the most heavily recruited athletes in the country as a Tight End and despite several offers from larger schools he selected Ohio University where he played from 1989 through 1992. While at O.U. he became one of the most decorated and celebrated players in Ohio University history. At Ohio University Carthen was a finalist for the Conference Player of the Year Award, he was selected All-Conference in his Junior and Senior seasons. He was also voted team MVP his senior year and is the all-time leader in sacks, tackles-for-Loss and caused fumbles.[1]

Professional career

Overview

Carthen had a three-year career in the National Football League from 1993 to 1995 as an outside linebacker. He was injured in 1995 after signing a free-agent contract offer with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He played one more year in NFL Europe with the Rhein Fire (Düsseldorf, Germany) from 1996 to 1997, where he led the league in special-teams tackles.


Entrepreneur

In 2002, Dr. Carthen formed Redeemed Management & Consulting, a full service and comprehensive consulting firm.[2] Prior to forming RMC, Dr. Carthen was involved with many successful entrepreneurial endeavors and charity-focused initiatives. He had served for over two decades in both the public and private sectors of Leadership and Business Management, specifically with the National Football League Players Association[3] and The Leaders of Tomorrow Initiative™.

As a Game-changing Speaker: Dr. Jason has entertained and energized over 2,000 audiences worldwide-Groups like The American Dairy Association, FedEx, Honda Motorcars USA, Oxford University in England, Chick-fil-a Corporation and The Federal Government. From 2009 to 2011, Carthen served as a host for WDLI, where he regularly appeared on Joy in Our Town and Praise the Lord.[4] Prior to TBN, Carthen appeared as a guest on ABC and NBC, as well as ESPN, where he was a contributor to the Outside the Lines television show. In January 2010, he created his weekly podcast The Leadership Minute.[5]

Philanthropist

Dr. Carthen is a longtime proponent of civic engagement, social justice and youth advocacy. He founded the Leaders of Tomorrow Initiative™, a non-profit organization aiming to educate underprivileged youth about leadership, character and civic responsibilities.[6] In 2008, he started a mentoring program that uses his own curriculum The T.I.E.S. that Bind to increase leadership capacities, character development, school engagement and reading skills among high school and college students.

Impact Through Data Collection Through his foundation's mentoring initiatives, he collects qualitative research data to assess the impact of mentoring on the success of high school students entering institutions of higher learning. Called The Influence Study™ Dr. Carthen's research utilizes grounded theory to track outcomes amongst program participants to serve as a predictor of long-term success. Seeking to positively impact society in perpetuity, Dr. Carthen also created a scholarship initiative for youth. Called The Leaders of Tomorrow Scholarships, he annually provides two graduating seniors with a four year renewable scholarship that otherwise would not be able to attend College. Called the Carthen Scholars™ the student's must demonstrate a willingness to be civically engaged and invested in giving back to the community. He also continues to organize and facilitate Healthy Marriage courses for adults in Cleveland and Northeast, Ohio. Dr. Carthen previously worked closely with the Governor's Office of Faith Based and Community Initiatives' Healthy Marriage Initiative Project, focusing upon stemming the tide of divorce in the African American community.[6]

Civic Engagement

Among his other external activities he sits on a number of boards and serves as the chairman of the board for Protem Healthcare.

Academia

In the fall of 2006, Dr. Carthen joined the faculty of Bethel University as Adjunct Professor of Leadership Studies.[4] A well-regarded scholar in the field of leadership studies and business management, Carthen's research focuses upon motivation, hope, optimism, and positive psychology. In 2006, he was published in the book, Servant Leadership: An Introduction.

Distinctions

Dr. Carthen is a distinguished Fellow in the Beta Phi academic & literary society. Dr. Carthen has been featured in the Harvard Business Review for his consultancy work.
