John Franklin Spalding

John Franklin Spalding (August 25, 1828 – March 8, 1902) was a missionary bishop of the Episcopal Church in the United States. He was born in Belgrade, Maine and attended Bowdoin College in the class of 1853, graduating from General Theological Seminary in the class of 1857. He served as an assistant priest at Grace Church, Providence, and became rector of St. Paul's Church, Erie, Pennsylvania in 1862.
He was consecrated "missionary bishop of Colorado, with jurisdiction in Wyoming and New Mexico" on December 31, 1873 by Bishops McCoskry, Bedell, Talbot, Coxe, and Kerfoot. Colorado was organized as a diocese with Spalding as its first diocesan bishop in 1887.
