John Harris Walter is an American mathematician known for proving the Walter theorem in the theory of finite groups.

Walter obtained his Ph.D. in 1954 from the University of Michigan under the supervision of Leonard Tornheim.[1] He is a professor emeritus of mathematics at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign.[2] In 2012 he became a fellow of the American Mathematical Society.[3]
