Jonathan Paul Wrather (born 16 March 1969)[1] is an English actor and editor. He is known for his soap opera roles in Coronation Street as Joe Carter from 2002 until 2003, and in Emmerdale as Pierce Harris from 2016 until 2017.[2][3]

Early life

Wrather was born in Manchester and grew up in, Cheshire.[4][5][6] He attended Sedbergh School in Cumbria. He developed a passion for theatre there, and was encouraged to pursue drama by his English teacher. He joined the National Youth Theatre in 1987 and was accepted at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, he left after completing a three-year acting course to pursue an acting career.[1]

Career

Wrather began his professional acting career in 1992 with the Actors Touring Company in a production of Frank Wedekind's Lulu adapted by Edward Bond. The production also played at the Lilian Baylis Theatre in London. Wrather begun a theatre career playing classical and contemporary roles in touring productions and playing London venues and the West End. He began to be offered roles in television drama which helped him carve a career in TV, notably the television series Cracker, Clocking Off (UK TV series), Bob And Rose (UK TV series), Fat Friends (UK TV series), The Fugitives (UK TV series), Bones (US TV series), Waterloo Road (UK TV series), Silent Witness (UK TV series), Jo (US TV series), and Casualty (UK TV series). Wrather was a series regular in the ITV soap opera Coronation Street and played Joe Carter in the show for 107 episodes. In January 2016, it was confirmed that Wrather would play the role of Pierce Harris in another ITV soap opera called Emmerdale, his character was introduced as the husband of Tess Harris (Nicola Stephenson).[2] Series regular Wrather left Emmerdale in September 2017, when the storyline concerning the rape of his new wife Rhona Goskirk came to a head.
