Judith Chapman (born Judith Shepard on November 15, 1945 in Greenville, South Carolina) is an actress known to fans of American daytime television. She has appeared on half a dozen daytime dramas since the mid-1970s. Her first soap role was Natalie Bannon Hughes on As the World Turns, a role she played from 1975 to 1978, and got a reputation on the show as "Nasty Natalie", due to her character's scheming temperament.
She is a soap opera veteran, having played:
- Natalie Bannon Hughes on As the World Turns (1975-1978)
- Charlotte Greer on Ryan's Hope (1983)
- Ginny Blake Webber on General Hospital (1984-1986)
- Sandra Montaigne on One Life to Live (1987)
- Anjelica Deveraux Curtis on Days of our Lives (1989-1990, 1991)
- Gloria Abbott Bardwell on The Young and the Restless (2005-present)
- Jill Foster Abbott on The Young and the Restless (temporary replacement, when Jess Walton was ill. Late 1980s.)
Beginning in January 2005, Chapman joined the cast of The Young and the Restless replacing Joan Van Ark in the contract role of Gloria Fisher.
A number of prominent actresses, such as Ilene Kristen and Donna Mills read for the role of Gloria, but after a single reading with actor Christian LeBlanc (who plays Gloria's son Michael), producers hired Chapman on the spot.[citation needed]
Chapman is the daughter of retired United States Air Force general Leland C. Shepard Jr., Chapman has had a long career in both movies and television, as well as her most recent stage work both as an actress and director of many well-received theatrical productions. Her most recent feature film role was that of the mother of Judy (Parker Posey) in the 2002 romantic comedy, The Sweetest Thing.
Chapman is also an avid yoga buff and instructor, theatrical director, stage actress and restaurateur.[citation needed] She was part-owner of St. James at The Vineyard, an upscale and eclectic restaurant specializing in New World Cuisine in Palm Springs, California.
Chapman received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Desert Theatre League (DTL) on Sunday, November 20, 2005, at the DTL's 18th "Desert Stars Awards" Ceremony held at the Riviera Resort in Palm Springs, California.
Chapman was a guest actress on two episodes of Magnum, P.I. - "The Black Orchid" from Season one[1] and "The Woman on the Beach" from Season two.[2] An unofficial online poll of the series' fans' favorite episodes ranked these episodes at #27 and #23, respectively, as of January 2008.[3]
She also guest starred on three episodes of Murder, She Wrote.
