Kunsthalle is, generally, a German term for an art gallery mounting temporary exhibitions, and supported by the local Kunstverein, an art association of local collectors and artists. In many German cities, the local Kunstverein established permanent collections similar to those of the Kunstmuseum, which derive mainly from earlier feudal times.
