The Lafayette County Courthouse is located in Darlington, Wisconsin. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.[1]

History

The money to build the courthouse came from Matt Murphy, a native of Benton, Wisconsin, who left 70% of his estate in his will to the county for a courthouse.[2] Ultimately, the cost of building the courthouse was more than $136,000. It is the only county courthouse in the United States to be fully funded by one person.
