Sutherland was first elected to Parliament in the 1987 elections as MP for the Christchurch electorate of Avon, replacing the retiring Mary Batchelor. He retired from politics at the 1999 elections. Sutherland did not hold any ministerial portfolios, but became Labour's Junior Whip in 1993.[1]
